LITTLE SCHOLAR PROGRAM
Pop Warner's corporate title, Pop Warner Little Scholars Inc, reflects the philosophy of our program. La Mirada Matadores Youth Football (LMMYF) is committed to promoting academic excellence and will issue recognition for academic achievement based on the end of the school year grades. LMMYF gives individual awards to those players/cheerleaders with a 3.0 grade average or above. Your team parent will have the application forms in which parents fill out.
LITTLE SCHOLAR PROGRAM ELIGIBILITY
In order to participate in Pop Warner activities each participant must meet a minimum scholastic requirement or obtain a waiver ("Scholastic Eligibility Form") from their school or school district. Each player and cheerleader must score at least 70 on the Little Scholars Scholastic Form. Many people would think of this as having a "C" average. All participates must turn in a full school year final report card.
Each year, the most academically accomplished Pop Warner kids compete for Academic All-American status. This process begins at the association level and up through each of the eight Pop Warner regions to the national level.
In 2017, more than 6,100 scholars qualified for the Pop Warner All-American Scholar program, representing the top 2% of all scholar-athletes in the Pop Warner program nationwide.
The PWLS All-American Program requires a minimum 96% grade point average to apply for All-American status.
After the applications have been processed, Pop Warner determines National First Team All-Americans (35 football, 35 cheer per grade), National Second Team All-Americans and National Honorable Mention Scholars.
ALL-AMERICAN SELECTION PROCESS:
- A final score is calculated for each student that consists of up to 100 points (85%) for the student's grades for the prior school year, along with up to 18 points (15%) awarded for the attached Addendum sheet of activities and achievements.
- Once the scores have been calculated, First Team All-Americans are selected. The top 35 football players and 35 cheerleaders per grade (plus ties) are selected as National First Team All-Americans.
- Second Team All-Americans are then determined by Pop Warner based upon the number of applications that were submitted for that year.
- Anyone that does not qualify for First or Second Team is awarded Honorable Mention status.
